Complete the scan

Hold use with a charged Survey Scanner on a supported target until completion. Supported categories include wildlife, mod and planet blocks, terrain, structures, planets, ships, wrecks and anomalies. People and machines can yield information cards without creating a collectible discovery. The report attributes shared classification and clearer failure feedback to Wave 21; actual target acquisition remains runtime unverified.

Repeated scans of the same specimen do not substitute for different individuals of that kind.

A Singularity Lens carried in inventory extends handheld range by 50% and halves scan time. Upgrades and ship sensors have their own effects; the Lens is not described as an automatically fitted ship scanner.

Use the correct record and scanner

The Survey Log item stores knowledge and has special copy/merge recipes. Discoveries and first-name claims use personal records; discovery data pays for research. These are distinct ledgers, so copying knowledge must not be described as duplicating all personal progression.

Cockpit X requires the Advanced Scanner Module. M opens the sensor sweep; detailed analysis is available inside the ship. Hold-use handheld scanning remains its own action. Consult controls, research and the creature catalog (discovery spoilers).

Survey Emitters have energy and heat behavior and R switches mining/weapon modes. Ferrite and Stellar tool/armor families, emitter upgrades and boss abilities require the correct host. Deep Quarry uses its special installation recipe rather than a normal gun fitting. See special recipes.
