Infected and warning cues

Listen before you move. Infected follow sound and blood, and the different kinds give you different warnings.

Afterfall 0.14.0Java 1.21.1NeoForge

Infected appearance

Historical developer lineup showing several clothed humanoid infected in a test area.

Existing developer capture, docs/evidence/26-realistic_infected_lineup.png. Its exact capture build is not established here. It shows visual variety, not an identification key for all 18 kinds or a new 0.14.0 test. Individual base-rig illustrations accompany the definition rows below; those omit generated outfits, special geometry, glow, animation and live posture.

Common infected

Infected can see roughly 32 blocks ahead in a wide cone, with darkness and sneaking reducing detection under the guide’s rules. They follow noise and blood, search last-known positions and do not burn in daylight. Active zombie-lore settings can override common behavior.

KindWarning or response
Shambler / WalkerSlow pursuit; avoid being surrounded
Runner4.2 blocks/s burst for six seconds, then four seconds slower
CrawlerLow silhouette; does not damage walls
ClimberTwo-second grab, climbs supported fences/ladders/ledges up to two blocks; smooth walls stop it
ScreamerTwo-second head raise; interrupt before a 96-block call
BloaterOn death, three-block smoke cloud for six seconds; range or a respirator helps
SpitterOne-second rear-up; 16-block corrosive spit, break sight and wash exposure
Bruiser60 HP; two-second wind-up for 6 HP attack; can smash timber
Armored InfectedTorso halves damage; head/limbs avoid that torso protection
StalkerQuiet, avoids light
BurrowerTwo-second ground warning; emerges from soft soil, not floors

These are default/static guide descriptions rather than results from a new combat test.

Nether and End

Ash Infected heat nearby air. Cinder Brutes have a 2.5-second wind-up and can break masonry; Corrosive Infected spit up to 20 blocks. Rift Stalkers flicker for one second before a blink up to six blocks. Void Callers chant for two seconds before a 64-block call. Anchor Brutes warn for three seconds before a ground slam.

There are 18 InfectedKind definitions across the three dimensions. That count excludes risen survivors, wildlife, seats, vehicles and projectiles.

Hordes and population

Regional population numbers are abstract until materialized into physical infected. The regional total is not the number of infected you will always see standing nearby. The guide describes hordes of 30–120 arriving two to six survival hours after disturbance, preceded by moans/radio warnings.

Claims do not stop infected. The optional no-materialize hook vetoes candidate spawn positions; it does not repel an existing infected, migration or a horde. The search-helicopter event can draw infected toward exposed survivors. No new event, population or performance test was run here.

Admin & server owner reference

Exact identifiers, original fields and source locators are preserved below. These records describe the documented mod version; they are not commands to run or proof of a new gameplay test.

Preserved source parameter order; the PDF does not expand every constructor field. Do not infer a new probability or sense radius from an unnamed value. Active zombie-lore configuration can override common behavior.
