Quality and grades
Calculate six separate penalties and understand how Standard, Fine and Masterwork change durations and exposure debt.
Quality begins at 100. The process subtracts six independently measured penalties once, then clamps the result to 0–100. Match a recipe’s targets; extra processing does not increase its effect strength or alcohol.
Schematic based on the reported Brewhaven 1.4.0 rules; the text below preserves conditions and exceptions.
Penalties
All time differences below use seconds. floor rounds down; abs takes the absolute difference.
| Measurement | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Cooking | min(40, 5 × floor(abs(actual − target) / 15)) |
| Temperature | min(20, floor(mean absolute temperature error / 2)); sampled per active cooking second |
| Stirring | 5 per missed checkpoint, maximum 15 |
| Distillation | min(15, 5 × abs(completed passes − target passes)) |
| Wood | 15 for a different wood when aging is required |
| Aging | min(20, 5 × floor(abs(actual age − target age) / 60)) |
Steady Stir forgives exactly one missed checkpoint for a batch started under the effect. Patient Cellarer forgives the first 120 seconds of aging overage only; the cask snapshots it at Start. It does not forgive an early finish. The recipe’s stir windows allow five seconds on either side.
For Wheatbeer, the warm-up from 60 to its 80-degree target can already contribute temperature error during the first twenty cooking seconds. The displayed cook target excludes heat-up.
Grades and duration
| Grade | Quality | Benefit/neutral duration | Harm duration | Canonical quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spoiled | 0–49 | No finished drink | Separate Spoiled Brew behavior | Not applicable |
| Standard | 50–74 | Base × 0.75 | Base ÷ 0.75 | 62 |
| Fine | 75–89 | Base × 1.00 | Base ÷ 1.00 | 82 |
| Masterwork | 90–100 | Base × 1.25 | Base ÷ 1.25 | 95 |
Duration arithmetic floors to ticks. Timed helpful/neutral effects last at least 20 ticks and harms at least 100 ticks. Instant strengths remain fixed. The effect catalog retains the report’s exact grade durations rather than rounding every value to a whole second.
A would-be finished serving below 50 becomes Spoiled Brew. It adds no alcohol, applies Bad Batch Poison at Fine duration, returns a glass bottle and starts the shared drink cooldown.
Quality is not strength
Grade changes duration and exposure debt. It does not change a recipe’s alcohol value or listed effect strengths. Sealing uses a canonical number in the same grade without upgrading it.
At Standard, Fine and Masterwork, exposure debt uses multipliers 4, 2 and 1 respectively. See drunkenness for the full alcohol/debt calculation and effect rules for replacement and cooldowns.
