Helpers and playback troubleshooting
Distinguish native preparation from online-source helpers, understand cached versions and collect useful diagnostics without assuming a tested fix.

Find the failing layer
An online link can fail even when the playback software is ready. Picture or sound can also fail after a link loads. Start with what you can see or hear; these checks follow the reports and have not been tested as fixes by the wiki.
| Symptom or condition | Investigate |
|---|---|
| Companion missing / startup linkage issue | Both required media JARs and the versions called for by your television or radio mod |
| FFmpeg unavailable | Startup errors about FFmpeg, the software that reads video and sound; share the relevant error with the mod maintainer |
| Windows ARM64 JVM | This build is missing the required Windows ARM64 playback file. The file mismatch is confirmed; a launch failure was not reproduced. |
| Online link fails while direct media works | The link’s availability and any errors about loading helper software; one failed link does not establish an outage |
| Cached helper appears usable offline | Cached version and fallback path; complete offline playback is not guaranteed |
| Override path rejected | Whether it is a regular file appropriate to the actual OS/JVM architecture; no invented path commands |
| No multiplayer output | Both media mods on each listener’s computer, their sound devices and the server’s playback setup |
| Unexpected server extraction | Ask the server owner to check the startup environment; the documented server path skips unpacking these files |
| TV picture but no sound | Your selected sound device and TV volume; Afterfall TV can show a silent picture |
| Radio silence | Your receiver, tower and sound device; linked radio needs the game’s sound system |
For gameplay setup and non-linked sources, see Afterfall radio and television. Original/server-file radio music and emergency TV fallback are Afterfall features that remain distinct from linked media.
Helpers are separate from FFmpeg
Explanatory diagram of reported behavior; no new gameplay or playback test is claimed.
Some online links need helper programs named yt-dlp and rustypipe-botguard. The companion can download them when needed. They are separate from the FFmpeg playback files already included in Binaries.
Afterfall’s supplied instructions describe a first-use yt-dlp download. The companion checks for current helper releases instead of always using one fixed version. Two machines with the same mod JARs can therefore have different helper versions or cache state on different dates. No helper was downloaded or executed for this wiki.
Cached fallback logic can reuse a helper when an update check fails and a cached version exists. That is not a promise of fully offline playback: source access and other layers can still require the network.
Collect a useful report
Tell the maintainer which versions of WaterMedia, Binaries and the television or radio mod you installed. Include your Minecraft, mod loader and Java versions, your operating system, what you tried and what happened. Add a relevant log excerpt; the technical reference below lists extra details a maintainer may request. Keep private URLs, cookies and tokens out of shared excerpts. No actual user paths or credentials were inspected for this documentation.
The source reports did not reproduce a new crash, vulnerability, performance regression or service outage. Their proposed first-use, cache, device and multiplayer tests remain future work.

Provider behavior
The classifier can request ffmpeg-windows-arm64.zip, which is absent from this companion build. ARM64 helper support does not provide that missing FFmpeg archive.
For reproducible diagnostics, record both mod JAR hashes, consumer JAR version/hash, Minecraft/loader/Java, OS/JVM architecture, selected archive, extracted version, helper versions, source kind and the failed stage. The provider paths maintain version files and reuse a prepared path within the running process.
| Concern | yt-dlp | rustypipe-botguard |
|---|---|---|
| Release lookup | GitHub yt-dlp/yt-dlp latest-release API | Codeberg ThetaDev/rustypipe-botguard latest-release API |
| Override Java property | watermedia.ytdlp.binary | watermedia.botguard.binary |
| Persisted version | Version file in binary directory | Version file in binary directory |
| Cached fallback | Can reuse cached helper on failed update lookup if cached version exists | Analogous cached-version fallback present |
| Preparation | Download .part, move into place, mark executable | Extract .zip / .tar.xz, prepare executable |
| Integrity finding | Calls verifySha256 when release checksum is non-null | No equivalent checksum claim in report |
| Asset names reported | Windows x86_64/ARM64; Linux x86_64/ARM64; macOS asset | Windows x86_64; macOS x86_64/ARM64; Linux x86_64/ARM64 |
The report does not specify a macOS architecture for yt-dlp’s table entry. Do not infer per-architecture packaging beyond the supplied statement. ARM64 helper support does not repair the absent Windows ARM64 FFmpeg ZIP.
Override and configuration limits
These are Java system properties, not slash commands, TOML fields or in-game settings. The provider checks a supplied path is a regular file and prepares execution permissions. Default override properties are absent unless set by the launcher/JVM. No actual override was inspected, set or tested here, and no command with an invented executable path is supplied.
No separate companion TOML class was identified. WaterMedia owns media quality, decoder, cache and network settings. Its hardwareAccel default is true and ffmpeg.disable is false; these are requests/options, not native-load or GPU-operation results.
Reproducibility
Record helper version/cache state in addition to JAR fingerprints. A license notice for yt-dlp, BotGuard, XZ or another component does not mean the executable is bundled for every platform. No unconditional checksum validation or BotGuard checksum guarantee can be inferred from the conditional yt-dlp finding.
